Meeting Notes TCS September 30

News

• Roberto new assistant professor from November 1st
• Dilian will spend one day a week at Scania for the next 6 months
• Karl Meinke, Mads Dam, and others submitted a proposal about Smart Systems to SSF. Applying Machine Learning and Isolation for improving Smart Systems. Combining autonomous cars with connected cars, especially looking into safety and security.
• A few changes in the pipeline for the Doctoral Program, but Dilian will consult first about them before telling the group more about it.
• Pedro is looking for volunteering doctoral students.

"Lönesamtal", mainly October 14

• Salary conversations, mainly for postdocs and faculty.
• Mads will send email about it.

Christmas Lunch Organization

• Susanna has kindly volunteered for this! Thank you very much, Susanna!

China Scholarship Council

• Almost full funding for PhD students from China.
• Proposals must be submitted TODAY.
• Insurance and travel funds must be covered by private money.
• This amounts to maybe 50,000 SEK per year.

TCS Strategic Development Plan

• No major surprises.
• Mads has prepared slides about this.
• The most important point is recruitment of female students and staff.
• Development plan has already been submitted.

Rektorsdialogen

• Female candidates sought for a new assistant professorship in software technology/software engineering!

• Vice chancellor's strategic effort.
  • Large surplus in KTH funds.
  • 150 mio. in the pot for next year.
  • Promoting Software Initiative (Mads)
  • Other areas: art/technology, robotics, scientific computing

Software Initiative Status

• Headed by Mads Dam
• Synopsis sent to vice chancellor
• Strong support from Ericsson and Saab
• ~ 25mkr (5 years)
• Main points:
  • Create research "clusters" (with industry and students)
  • Cluster in each of the 4 schools (CSC, ICT, EES, ITM)
  • Long-term research
  • Project seed funding
  • Early stage researcher support
  • Student summer intern program
• Upcoming center calls, Vinnova and SSF

Discussion with the Dean

• Currently attends APTs of all groups.
• Goal: forum to discuss any and all issues.
• Also: school info meetings 4-5 times a year, but they don't allow a lot of discussion.
• Dean for 4.5 years.
• Rektor has prolonged the appointment until summer 2017.
• Dean has less than 2 years left.
• What should the Dean focus on within his remaining time?
• Dilian brings up issue of funding of research time.
• Gullan says that GRU share is similar to other universities. What seems to be the main difference is the distribution. Some professors have only 2% teaching, others much more than 50%.
• Decision of CSC was that applying for external funds should be encouraged.
• ~ 2018: next KTH research assessment exercise.
• Scientific impact is important, grant applications increasingly ask for "pathways to impact". We should think more about working to be highly-cited.
• Travel support (administrative): CSC is reorganizing administration and travel agency (renegotiation).
