1. Presentation from Emma Bayne

Emma Bayne is a member of the CSC Communication Group and responsible for web content and translation between English and Swedish. The aim is to create common visual output for the whole school.

Some pages will move to an internal space. There will be both an external and an internal view.

External view: a summary; application, requirements, funding.

Internal view: for students already enrolled, flatter structure? Requirements and regulations.

Previous theses should be available on the website, or at least have links to listings in DiVA.

The maintainer of the CS program website should be contact with Emma and take a course in Polopoly.

2. HDE/PC Meeting with the Dean, December 6 2012

Several issues arose from the meeting, some described below and discussed.

It was noted that there is a distribution of responsibilities between HDE, PC, and Admin (Birgit, Mattias).

2.1 Budget and course financing

There will be no separate central funding of the PhD programs from the Rector.

Erik noted that money for courses should as far as possible be used inside KTH - hiring external lecturers should be avoided.

It was noted that there is a need for a broad agreement concerning funding of courses among departments at the school.

One problem is that the incentives for (and willingness of) faculty to give research courses is currently limited.

Patrik raised the question of who pays for external students. Erik noted that is usually done by quid-pro-quo agreements with other universities on courses. Dilian considered this OK as long as there is only minimal extra work required.

The issue of funding of supervision was discussed.

Dilian noted the need to work out a proposal scheme for solving the problem - a model and structure.

It was mentioned that Uppsala University had organized courses targeted at PhD students in leadership, in combination with projects for college students. This was seen as an idea that could be followed.

2.2 Course offer strategy

Dilian noted that a warehousing is needed of the number of graduate students, to estimate the required volume. Then, a model for new and repeated courses can be developed.

3. Doctoral student representatives

  • Raveesh Meena (TMH)
  • Pedro de Carvalho Gomes (TCS)
  • Francisco Vina (CVAP)
  • Michael Schliephake (HPCViz)

4. Other questions

It was noted that there are no precise requirements for theses. A compromise may be to specify typical properties of a theses.

Other questions discussed:

  • Documents and regulations
  • Web pages
  • The quality process (documentation)
  • Regulations around stipendiates and industrial students
  • Supervisory meetings
  • Doctoral ladder: relate to progress and criteria for Lic and PhD?

5. Next Meeting

April 16, 13.15-15.00.
